Art + Life | Spring 2009 | University of California Santa Cruz

Introduction to Visual Studies and Interventionist Art

new blog

Chloe just wrote saying she misses art + life. which is very touching. I’m still posting cool stuff, but for my film class. You can find that site here: http://performative.com/fdm20c –but, many of the posts will be related to that class/kind of useless if you’re not in it. Still, the odd good thing does happen there.

I miss you guys too!

next year: FDM 20c in fall & spring

Artlifers, if you want to take another class with me, and you can somehow finagle your way into a FDM requirement, I’m teaching this class in fall:

FILM 20C – Introduction to Digital Media
01-LEC(33229)
TuTh 10:00AM – 11:45AM Oakes Acad 105 09/24/2009 – 12/04/2009

The schedule will say it is closed, because it is for FDM majors, but, maybe some of you are exactly that.

Finishing up your narrative evaluations today. Really good work this quarter!!!

Our Subject Is You

Check out this show curated by Lee Walton, which has participatory elements: http://oursubjectisyou.wordpress.com/

Our Subject is You is an exhibition of participatory art organized by conceptual artist Lee Walton and curator Xandra Eden for the Weatherspoon Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Museum visitors participating in the show are invited to post their comments during the exhibition, which runs from June 19 – September 13, 2009.

just spamming you to say…

office hours today have been SUSPENSEFUL due to a large volume of people walking around the hall outside my door. Except for my next door neighbor Laurel, nobody was walking around with the idea of coming to my office hours. Oh well.

& about this blog, now that the quarter is (nearly) over:

I’ll keep posting here if I find relevant art/life stuff to post about, & will also post my teaching schedule for next year if you want to continue working with me. I’ll be teaching in Art & Film & Digital Media.

david lynch’s interview project

david lynch has started a project very reminiscent of our daily project & natalie’s 365 project.

AFC post about MoMA, women, facebook

This Art Fag City post collapses a bunch of topics we’ve been talking about lately–facebook, sexist curatorial practices, more! Check it out:

Facebook Status Update Sparks Discussion: MoMA’s Fourth and Fifth Floor Lack Women

Thanks to Jerry Saltz, I spent Monday morning combing through 500 plus comments and auxiliary wall posts facebook users posted on his status updates over the weekend. What are people talking about? According to Saltz, “Of the 383 works on the 4th & 5th flrs. of MoMA’s perm. coll., only 19 are by women (4%).”

last week of class!

about this week:

1) there is a recommended reading on eres not on the syllabus, with “bitch” in the title–it’s from bitch magazine.

2) your TAs have those handouts I mentioned about topic/argument & thesis statement

3) I owe some of you e-mails. Sorry, busy! soon.

4) I drove by campus yesterday & did not see hunger strike happening, so, plan to meet in the classroom tomorrow, not at the base of campus.

5) MOST IMPORTANTLY, draft of paper due in section for workshop!

last

6) I’ll probably be late to my office hours this week. Count on me being there by 3 for sure, earlier maybe.

see you tomorrow!

natalie’s sections: base of campus on thursday

natalie’s sections will meet at the base of campus on thursday.

i am debating about monday’s lecture being held there, but I have deep reservations because we won’t be able to see images, so the day will be mostly lost. Stay tuned for further news.

Also, a question: is this a picket line or a demonstration, ie, is this a strike? Is a strike being called for? I’m out of the loop having been in sweden this past week.

check out this little documentary about banksy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e0IJSOq0xg

The quality is too poor to project, but it’s worth looking at…

helping at MAH

Students, if you want to help set up my MFA show (7 artists are showing, we all need help!) we can be found at the MAH on Front street during these hours:

MAY 15-28 (Deinstall and Install) Hours:

Weekdays (including Mondays) 830a-5p
Weekends 11a to 5p
Exception: Memorial Day MAY 25: 10a-5p

If you get there before the museum is open, there is a buzzer to your left as you face the entrance.

You could certainly write about your experiences in the art appreciation project, but mostly, we’d all just be grateful to have your help. I’m going to be there tomorrow through Monday, then the following week, Tuesday through Thursday. (Remember my office hours are canceled on May 20 and relocated to MAH on the 27th).
